Mental Whiplash!

 


Fluffers was a bit confused as to why I was up before the sun, 
as that hasn't been a thing for almost a year. She thought it was great...
me, not so much. 8:00 am appointments should be reserved 
for people who live within 5 minutes of The Cross!

"Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden, forceful back-and-forth movement of the head..." Replace the word "head" with "mind," and you will understand what we've experienced in the past 48 hours.🤕 Ken and I had mentally prepared ourselves for a renewed battle, so when our oncologist seemed less than concerned about the spots on Ken's scan, we were more than a little taken aback. Apparently, they're too small to do anything about, and there is a chance that they're not actually a recurrence, but scar tissue...or something.🤷🏼‍♀️ 

So for now, we're in a holding pattern, with another scan booked in May. Could the spots be cancer? Sure. Could they have grown or multiplied by the next scan? Yup, cancer doesn't follow the rules. Could they be completely benign or have vanished? Absolutely. We are just enjoying each day as it comes.🥰 So while we don't know what the future holds, we know God does, and that's enough, because He's good, even when life isn't.

  We finally left the house and didn't go to a medical appointment! We bummeled around the Premium Outlet Mall for a few hours.  (It's less busy than most shopping malls. 🙂) Ken's CT scan results are finally back, and they are clear! 🎉 Ken is NED, which means No Evidence of Disease. (They don't use the words "cured" or "in remission" anymore.) So, as of right now, Ken does not have cancer. Confusing, right?  "Um, Heather, you told us he has Stage 4 cancer, and there's no 5, so what's up ?" Well, I think there should be a Stage 5! With all the advances in cancer treatments over the past decade, Stage 4 no longer means imminent death, as it once did; it just means that the cancer has spread to multiple places.   Starting upper left, going clockwise: The entrance to The Cross Cancer Institute (CCI) CCI was built in 1968; it's older than both Ken and me! Ken is waiting for his appointment with Dr. Zhu. I found on-street parking, but because it's only for an hour,  I'm not sure it was worth the stress! 🤨 Sorry for the lack of communication; life has been a bit turbulent lately. 😵‍💫  And that would be the biggest understatement of my life. 🫤  While I was going through my own treatment, Ken would often say that it's harder on the caregiver than the patient. After Ken's second infusion, I asked him if that was still true. 😇 "Come on, that was a stupid comment." Actually, it was more like "Khum ahnnn, thad was a 'tupid commennnnnt."  No, he wasn't drunk; he was in the midst of Hell Week. Can You Fail A Biopsy? (Post #4)

  Ha! Or you can just get an overnight pass and not return... 😁 In the 30+ years I've known Ken, I don't recall him ever failing a test...until we received the results of the biopsies Dr. Haase took during his surgery. 🫤 Oh, I know a biopsy is technically a procedure, not really a test per se, but it pops up as a "New Test Result" in the MyHealth app, so I'm calling it a test.🤭 I received an unwelcome surprise when I read the report and realized that while the surgeon had removed all visible cancer, there were more than a few microscopic cells left behind. Dr. Haase called us with the results the evening before Ken received the report and seemed quite put out that she hadn't managed to remove every single cancer cell - I think she took it personally.😊 During our conversation, s he listed some of the places where the margins weren't clear but reminded us that the HIPEC procedure done after his surgery should have nuked any remaining cells.
